What to Look for Before You Hire a Professional

We know that not every homeowner thinks about cleaning their roof. Out of sight, out of mind. As a result, homeowners don’t always know what signs to look for when they’re trying to decide if their roofs should be cleaned at all.

We believe in proper roof maintenance, but we don’t think you need to hire someone unless the signs are there that you should. In this article, we want to give you specific examples of what to look for on your roof so you’ll know when it’s time to reach out to a company like ours.

#1: Black Streaks

You might notice a series of black streaks running down your roof. These streaks are actually lines of mold. (We also call them Gloeocapsa Magma.) When left untreated, these stripes can seriously compromise the structure of your roof. More than that, they can present health risks to the people living inside your home.

We’re not alarmists, but you need to remove these streaks as soon as you can. The mold has been up there longer than since you first noticed it. The sooner you get rid of it, the healthier you and your house will be.

#2: Moss

Moss looks harmless; how could it possibly concern homeowners? As temperatures rise, moss can trap moisture in your roof. That will damage the shingles or the material your roof is composed of. Removing moss is a cheaper option than having to fix whatever problems that moss helps create in the future.

#3: Animal Droppings, Debris, and Other Grime

No one likes to look at a collection of bird droppings or even just general dirt, for that matter. Cleaning your roof is an easy way to maintain the aesthetic of your home. We’ve said it before: you don’t want to be “that house” that everyone talks about. That’ll hurt both your home value and, more than likely, your neighbors’ perception of you.

#4: You Don’t Know if the Roof Has Ever Been Cleaned

Maybe you moved in a few years ago, and you can’t vouch for whether the previous owners ever cleaned the roof. If that’s the case, then we recommend you set aside some time to inspect your roof and look for the signs we listed above. You might not need to hire a crew right away, so don’t look for things that aren’t there. That said, the fact that you don’t know if the roof has ever been cleaned means it’s time to at least start asking the right questions.
